New Blood Cancer App
Collaboration on Blood Cancer App wins a Patient Care Pioneer Award
We (The Clinical Informatics Research Unit) are collaborating on an exciting project towards the development of a blood cancer app which has recently won a Patient Care Pioneer Award by Leukaemia UK.
This award provides funding for healthcare professionals to undertake innovative, patient-centred projects that will improve treatment, care, and quality of life for leukaemia patients.
Professor Francesco Forconi, Consultant Haematologist from the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) and Professor of Haematology at the University of Southampton, aims to develop an algorithm in which to identify lower-risk patients with CLL (Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) who may not need treatment for a long time after their diagnosis, or possibly ever. This aims to reduce unnecessary clinical interventions, easing patient anxiety and reducing the strain on healthcare resources. More info can be found here.
Future workings: Following this work, a prognostic risk tool to support clinicians is planned to be developed through CIRU early this year with Ben Sale, Data Scientist, and Ashley Heinson, Data Science Lead, leading from the Unit.
